NHSTA Goes Green

08/30/09

The Great NHSTA Green Experiment

Did you know the average American uses more than 700 pounds of paper each year? I would hate to think what the average TEACHER uses each year! As a teacher, you know what it is like to get huge amounts of paper mail. Just leave your mailbox alone for a week and you’ll get the point. As part of NHSTA’s new initiative to make a positive impact on our environment, we will be going paperless with the 2009-2010 school year.

Why go paperless you ask? As science educators we all know every green action adds up to a greener world and it also has it’s benefits:

  • Easy Access
    • View documents as soon as they are available without waiting for the mail
  • Less Paper in Your Life
    • What teacher doesn’t want less clutter? You don’t need to file, store or throw away paper documents.
  • Convenient Storage and Retrieval
    • Your electronic document is just a click away. No need to search through those stacks of papers to find what you are looking for.
  • Better for the Environment
    • Fewer trees are cut down, fewer resources are consumed in paper manufacturing and fewer pollutants are released. Less paper means less waste. Did you know paper currently accounts for 1/3 of all landfill waste?

So what does this mean to you as an NHSTA member? Here are a few ways it will impact you:

  1. All workshop and conference announcements will be e-mailed and accessible via the website, www.nhsta.net
  2. All newsletters will be made accessible via the website, www.nhsta.net
  3. Registering for workshops/conferences and renewing your membership can be easily done at www.nhsta.net

In this transition period, we want to make sure we do not exclude any of our members. This could happen for a number of reasons. Perhaps you just changed your e-mail address and you have not notified us. Maybe your Internet provider blocks e-mails sent by our association. You may not have easy access to a computer. If any of these apply to you, it is IMPERATIVE that you e-mail us with your information (new e-mail address or that you would like a paper copy) as soon as possible. Thank you for helping NHSTA make this world a better place.
